Today we went to Calgary to pick up the cart that I won in the raffle at the Bernese Specialty. It is beautiful! It was donated by Paul and Lynne Bagnall from Edmonton. Paul has been carting with his Bernese for many years and he makes very nice, well built carts. I feel very lucky to have a genuine Paul Bagnall cart.
Here is Bosley showing off his new cart.
I haven't actually hitched Bosley to the cart yet. He will need to get used to it moving behind him first. Today, I just followed Bosley around the yard, pulling the cart behind him. He didn't mind it all at - even when I bumped him with the shafts.
Bosley already has realized that he must stand between the shafts and will step in-between them on command.
Here is Bosley, standing nicely in front of his cart. Maggie is keeping her distance just in case the cart moves.
Hopefully one day I will be able to get Maggie hitched to the cart too. She is such a "scaredy dog" about certain things, it may be awhile to convince her that the cart is OK.
Such a handsome boy! He looks so proud in his harness with his cart! Can't wait to read all about his carting adventures.
ReplyDeletethat is WAY cool Bos!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you think you could take Gyp and Jane for a ride?? They would love it!!!
p.s. Kim, you REALLY need a bigger vehicle now LOL
how cute is that!
ReplyDeleteOh the cart is sooo nice! Wait a minute! A Cart + A Berner = A Cart pulling Berner! How splendid! I know Berners are used for pulling carts. Are there any competitions there where Bosley can take part in. I know one thing that he needs to learn when entering for a trial or exam. He needs to walk back or reverse with the cart attached to him. I watched it on APL! Those pictures are just nice...

Hi Amber-Mae. Yes, there are carting competitions that we can enter when we are good enough. The are called draft tests. The basic draft test is manouvering skills like turning and backing up as well as hauling a loaded cart over hills and around trees. The advanced draft test is more challenging with a heavier load and you must handle your dog from behind the cart. There is also a backpacking portion in the higher level. You can also get Brace Drafting titles, where you do all the same exercises, but with 2 dogs hitched to a cart.
ReplyDeleteSounds really exciting! I really do want to be a cart pulling dog too but there are no such competitions here in my country. My country is no fun!

Hi good to meet you! I was looking at a cart, but was going to pull it with my bike, the dog sitting in the back ... :-)
