'Tis The Season . . .

. . . for shedding.

I often get asked if Bernese shed very much. If you come to my house for one of their weekly grooming sessions, you will get your answer. Yes, they shed. . . a lot! Right now Bosley is blowing his winter undercoat (Maggie lost hers already) and the fur that I vacuum is enough to make a whole new dog, never mind what I brush out of them.

Here is an example of a typical "fur ball" that is brushed out:

It looks kinda like an un-groomed toy poodle; only it weighs more :0

Maggie is eyeing it, wondering if it is alive. Maybe there is a gopher hiding in there!

Bosley cannot bear to look at it. "Eeeewwww! All that fur came from me?"

Wooohooo! That's a lot of fur... We're shedding right now too but me, I'm bald!

BOL! WOW!!! That is the #1 reason my pawrents chose a short haired dog! (#2 was cause I was so cute!)

"The Bernese Mountain Dog is different from most other dogs in many respects. Take his size, for example. Everything about a fully grown Bernese is big and strong, massive and mighty; his body, his paws, his teeth , his tongue, his tail,his emotions, his responses, his will, his good, and when they exist, not-so-good habits. Anyone who wants to adopt a Berner needs to think large. A Berner cannot be carried to the vet's in a basket; a struggling Berner cannot be pulled along on a leash; a fully-grown Bernese cannot be forced into a down position by the use of a hand-or even two. A Berner slurps water with a bigger tongue from a bigger bowl (and thus slobbers more water on his folks); his coat takes longer to brush; he must go for longer walks.
