Disappointing

Maggie had X-rays done on her foot this afternoon and I promised her that she would get her splint off today.  I had to break that promise.  The X-rays showed minimal healing.  The vet (and I) had expected to see a callous at the break area, but if the callous is forming, it is not as far advanced as it should be.  The vet said he was very disappointed and  that he would like to re-x-ray again in 2 weeks.  Depending on what those x-rays will show, will determine our next course of action.  Maggie will need to wear her splint for at least another month, even if the next set of x-rays show that there is healing occurring.  The vet said that the wrap job that I did on Maggie's foot was quite good, so I can continue to change the bandages myself, so that part is good.

I am very disappointed, to say the least.  I was looking forward to getting Maggie out for runs again, and back to training.  Maggie has been very good through all of this, but I am sure that she misses being out and having fun.  She is such an active and social dog that it is hard to keep her cooped up at home, knowing how much she loves to be out interacting with everyone.  It is even getting hard for me to take Bosley out for a walk, knowing that she has to stay behind. The other day, I took Bosley out for a walk around the neighbourhood, and when I looked back towards the house, I could see Maggie watching us from the window.  I felt so bad that she had to stay behind.

  1. awww...poor maggie! that is so hard. When sam was on restricted exercise I started teaching him games that he could play with limited movement. You could work on some shaping games (teach her to do something weird like look left/right, or wag her tail on cue, or yawn, or something like that...)

You could also work on your dumbbell! And you can start teaching her to use her nose- have you heard of the muffin tin game? There is a video on youtube if you search for "muffin tin game" it is fun- and can keep them entertained.

    Poor Mags!

  2. Oh poor Maggie and Kim! I know exactly how you feel. When Mira had her mass removed we felt so bad leaving her behind on walks. I felt like she was asking why she couldn't go too. =( Amanda has some great suggestions though I'm wishing for a better x ray next time.

  3. Awwww... poor Maggie.

Keep hanging in there sweet girl! Once you are all healed up you can run and play as much as your want.

You hang in there too mom. It must be sooo hard to leave her behind on walks, but it's so she gets better so don't feel bad. I know, that's sounds easier than it is.

  4. Now that really really sucks. I had my fingers crossed.

Can you take her for some extra car rides when you go on errands?? Maybe something like that?? I think she deserves a Tim Bit or Two ....

Maybe we could come over and say hi to her :)

I really do miss seeing Maggie.

  7. I dont know if you believe in this stuff or not but here is homeopathic remedy.

    The homeopathic remedy

Symphytum: This remedy is best known for helping broken bones rejoin and
heal. It should be taken after a bone is set to ensure proper joining of
the bone. (A common recommendation is to take it several times in the
first few days, then once a week while the bone is healing.) It is also
useful in many cases when pain persists in old, healed fractures.
